Everyone who thinks they have an opinion about Saudi Arabian society or Muslim society or women in these societies should read this book - it will educate you on many topics. This novel is written from the perspective of four young women in Saudi Arabia and tells about their loves and losses, university life, family life, careers, sex, and marriage. They are full of romantic ideals just like girls from the west and do have relationships with men. There are stark differences with the west of course, but I learned that young girls do have freedoms and do make a lot of choices for themselves.
This novel also shows how a lot of young women are changing and how this is affecting many parts of their society. It is a very interesting book and shed a lot of light on a society that many westerns don't know much about.

Hi Allison,
ReplyDeletesounds interesting. However, I suggest you read "The Islamist" from Ed Hussain. The experiences he made during his time as a radical islamist and the time he spent in Saudi-Arabia tell a slightly different story about the freedom of women. It is very shocking. Of course it's not all bad, but according to him, things are getting worse.
